My new workout routine. Once a week.
Was it raining or just cloudy? It matters not. No gym flow today. I’m going to battle an old demon and get reacquainted with an old friend. You see, I’m not quite afraid of heights but I am afraid of falling so I don’t go on my terrace very often. Today, I’m going to do yoga indoors and jump rope on my terrace to get over this mess. See you on the other side…and Good morning!
I wrote this earlier this morning on my instagram page. I decided to put it on a blog because it is now an important part of my life…you must realize how exercise is important to overall health. Sure, eating right can help you lose weight and heal ailments on its own. However, to maintain that wellness, you need to exercise your organs – heart, lungs, muscles – and this exercise benefits your skin, your mind, and your spirit.
We all know (or should know) that Yoga is NOT exercise, even though there are certain styles of yoga that seem that way. I won’t get into that right now. What I will say is that a blend of yoga and exercise is too beneficial for health and healing, it’s impossible to ignore.
A lot of us have addictions and vices. When we can’t get rid of an addiction, we replace it. I would rather you replace your negative vice with an addiction to exercise and healthy habits any day. The key is not to over do it. This is why I had this new workout in place.
I worked out in the gym for 3 days in a row. I increased my elliptical workouts and started lifting weights. I was super sore. Then last night, I had a dream. One of my goals for next year is to take a class at Aerospace. I went there a couple of times when they were at their previous location but never made it into a class. Chalk it up to fear or laziness or both, it no longer matters. I had a dream last night that I was at Aerospace. I paid $35 for an AeroJump class with Mr. Michael himself. I got in the class and stayed in the back of the room. Sooner than later, he and I had a jump rope battle, and I almost won. He had more stamina but I was able to go faster and do more tricks. Our eyes locked the entire time, the rest of the class stood back and watched in awe as this little lady was going toe to toe with a master.
I woke up this morning, determined to get as close to that as I can. However, I haven’t touched a jump rope in almost 9 months. I usually jump rope in my apartment (yes, I have that much space) but I decided that it wouldn’t make sense to mess up my hardwood floors any more than they are messed up. I looked out at the terrace. I walked out on it. Fear overtook me…and it was then I decided to not fear anymore.
For 3 minute intervals, I jumped rope. I went slow and fast. I did tricks and no tricks at all. Before I started my intervals, I stretched out as I usually do. After the first interval, I went inside and did 2 Sun Salutations. Being too eager, I didn’t take off my socks. The first two Salutations were basic but I over did it with my right knee. I felt slight pain (see what being impatient in the mind does?). I went back out and did the second 3 minute interval, which actually lasted 3 and a half minutes. I realized that I didn’t feel much pain when I jumped on my right leg, I felt it more when I bent my knee. I steadily breathed into my knee, taking it easier and going slower. Then when I went back inside, I carefully took off my socks and got on the yoga mat. I stayed in mountain pose for an extra minute. I did my Sun Salutations, this time, I included chair pose and took a lot of caution on my knee (chair pose is great for knees). I felt a lot better. My 3rd interval was for 4 minutes of jump rope. No pain in my knee. I did my final set of Sun Salutations, this time, including chair and lizard pose and a flying snake pose (akasha bhujangasana) instead of plank/chaturanga dandasana. Afterwards, I did my cool down poses – Warriors 1 – 3, Peaceful Warrior, Extended Hand to Big Toe pose and King Dancer pose on each side.
Everything lasted 20 minutes but I was able to sweat and be at peace. It felt fantastic. I recommend for everyone that exercises in the gym to take one day to do something different. No matter if it’s yoga, walking, swimming…it doesn’t matter. Spend one day doing something outside of a gym. Go to the park or do something in your home. It doesn’t have to induce sweat either. As long as its challenging, you will be fine. Don’t let all the personal trainers in the world tell you to sweat, sweat, sweat, KILL. No way. You can do that if you like…and that’s fine. But take time to take it in. Be easeful…but not lazy.
Every week, I will add this routine to my workout week. I’ll definitely keep you posted on reaching my goal of making it to the awesome place called Aerospace. This workout will help me get on the right track to make my dreams come true.
I teach yoga and I do my gym flow…but jumping rope and walking are my very old friends and I appreciate them too much. You should too. As a matter of fact, tell me how exercise AND doing other healthy things (drinking teas, or taking supplements, or reading a book) has helped you on your journey. Let’s do this together.
In the meantime…stay strong, stay healthy, and fight dis-ease!
