4 Health Rules You can Break Today

Oh no!!!

This article was sent to me by one of my friends. They wanted to hear me kick and scream after reading the article (I only did a small scream, trust me).  Instead of going berserk, I decided to share this article with you and let you know why MOST of this information is INCORRECT or INACCURATE!

  1. EAT YOUR WATER? I don’t think so!!

Let me be the first to say, “you really may not need 8 glasses of water per day!” May not are the key words because how much water you need depends on your weight and your present state of health. However, eating your vegetables is like saying, “soda is a liquid so you can get all your water needs from it!” People don’t realize how important water – and water ALONE – is to the body. Water is necessary to help transport necessary nutrients to cells, blood, and plasma. Water helps these minerals and vitamins absorb into the body, especially the ones that are water-soluble. Your body actually KNOWS the difference between water and everything else so you go ahead and think that the foods you eat will give your body enough water. Then you can come back to me when you have edema and wonder why your body is retaining water, which is never a good thing!

      2.    Fill half your plate with produce. I actually like this one.

I like this one because it’s true, it’s hard to figure out what a serving is. My general rule is that if it’s the size of your fist, then it’s enough for your stomach. Too many people eat too much meat. I think this is a great way to balance your meat intake and get your fill of veggies. Read the rest of this entry »

Dr. Besser vs. Dr. Oz in Apple Juice Showdown

Sometimes, it takes a while for information to sink into our brains. Especially now that there is soooo much coming from TV, Internet, and unknown voices that whisper some how into our psyches. When I got this information, I was a little peeved…only because I’m mad I didn’t get this sooner.

I’ll go in my chronological order, even though this is not the order of events in this story. I want to go with my own order so that you can see my thinking process and how sometimes, learning things later can really help your awareness to grow…

(don’t think I wasn’t going to make my weekly post. it just took some time for me to figure out a topic :p:))

Take a moment to think about your childhood. When was the first time you heard the word “selfish?” The first time I think I heard that word was from my mother. I don’t remember why she called me that but after that first time, I kept hearing it and hearing it, “you’re selfish!” It took a while to figure out what that meant and how it related to me:

You only think about yourself.

Health Sidebar II: BMI vs BFP

I’ve been wanting to talk about this for a while but didn’t have the time (or had too much time procrastinating…just being honest). I’m watching Dr. Oz right now and he gave this lady her BMI. He said it was “32,” which is supposed to be high.

To tell you the truth, I was never a fan of BMI. However, before I go into my rant, let me explain what BMI is…

Essential 4 Series: Breathing Methods – Tai Chi I

6 11 2009

When people ask me how I started on this path to health, I reply by saying, “Yoga saved my life” and then I talk about how I finally connected with Yoga. While Yoga did save my life, it’s not the first thing that got me on the path to wellness. I learned how to properly breathe way before I met up with Yoga.

The year was 1995…it was early in the year. It wasn’t quite Spring yet but Winter was definitely over. To put it plainly, I was a serious pothead then. I also loved Kung Fu Movies. Watching the “Drive In Movies” on Channel 5 in Brooklyn was my Kung Fu fix…but I never even took a karate class.

So back to 1995, I was hanging out with my friends one day, smoking (which was the usual back then), when one of my friends started talking about Kung Fu. I mentioned that I loooved Kung Fu movies and how much I always wanted to learn Tai Chi (by this time, I was a huge Jet Li fan…my favorite movie then was called the “Tai Chi Master“…so I was really open to what my friend had to say). My friend then said to me, “want to learn some Kung Fu right now?”
All of us…all 12 of us, immediately perked up. Our excitement seemed to come to a near boil in almost seconds as we all said a resounding “yes”, like we were in the Pothead Church Choir. He told us to sit down and listen well.
