Health Sidebar VII: The Essential 4 Series Continues…Neti Pot Love!

Two days ago, I took a break from my neti pot. Yesterday, my nostrils were blocked, like the first time I started..

This morning, I had an eyelash in my eye. Taking it out via rubbing/blowing, left my eye with a lot of red lines. As I started to use the neti pot on my right side (comes out the left nostril and there was redness in my left eye, my nostril was once again blocked. I relaxed my shoulders and my face and looked into my eye.

The first thing I noticed was that the red lines in my eye moving and even disappearing. Usually, I would get frustrated and stop but I kept breathing slowly, keeping everything relaxed. One minute later, my left nostril was flowing. I did the same process with the right, with the same result.

It’s amazing how the neti pot nit only clears your nostrils/sinuses, but also your eyes!

I posted this on my Facebook page yesterday. As I read it over, I remembered when I posted a blog about even trying to use a neti pot (click here for the entire post).
I haven’t used a neti pot in a long time. One day, I just felt like there was too much mucus in my brain, eyes, and chest. Mind you, I could do pranayama practices with no problems. My sinuses were clear. So I decided that for one week, I would do the neti pot every morning, before I shower.

It’s been almost a week. I skipped a day and my sinuses clogged up again. Now, there is more of a flow and my head feels clearer. My eyes feel less pressure and my skin is even clearing up (Neti pot usage generally helps with colds, allergies, and minor sinus infections). Continue reading

Hello all!

You know, it seems like every 3 to 6 months, I disappear and reappear like nothing has happened. This is all my fault. Is it rare for a blogger to admit her faults? Is it too common for a blogger to express all of their issues in why they don’t post enough or why they will stop posting altogether?

This is a shame, I know…but this is not my reasoning for writing to you today. My reasoning is that there are going to be a lot of changes for this Fight Dis-ease! blog.

First off, I’m moving my entire blog from Blogger to WordPress! I know I have talked about it in the past but for the past year, I’ve been putting the same information on 2 different platforms. That doesn’t make any sense and opens the door for me to not post like I should. Time to stop that mess right now. ;)

If you notice at the top, I have a new menu list. That means that you can see all my Random Thoughts posts in one section, all my Movements post in one section, and so on. I also included in my new menu the “SeeYoga Blog.” This new blog that I created on Twitwall talks mostly about Yoga. Not in regards to Yoga as a healing modality to many ailments and dis-eases but as something that I am so passionate about. My SeeYoga blog gives quotes and will talk about Yoga on many different levels. In this blog, I will also include classes in the NYC area that are cheap and just plain good! I’ll also add feeds from this site to my blog so that you can get glimpses of what is going on.

There are a lot of things that I am going to do soon which will take up my time. The first change is Intermediate Yoga Teacher Training. That will be from September to December but it won’t stop me from at least posting once a month.

Of course, I’ll be doing more Yoga classes and workshops. I’ll make sure to post them ASAP. The last time I wanted to post a workshop I was doing, I didn’t put it up because by the time I was ready to do it, the event was sold out. :(

I need to make myself more available to you and as always, everything is a process but this time…it’s a process that I’m really going to keep up with. Integrity is key (along with clarity, confidence, and conviction).

As always, stay strong, stay healthy and fight dis-ease!

Karma Yogi IV: March is for Women!

February was a celebration of Black History. Now we move from one aspect of who I am to another…Women’s History! March is Women’s History Month as well as National Women/Girls HIV/AIDS Day on March 10th. So let’s do this Karma Yogi session with a little celebration and links for you to get into the spirit of celebrating Womanhood:

Neighborhood Inaugural Ballvar iamInit = function() {try{initIamServingHandler(320,480,698232,”http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/Resources/Css/css2.css”)}catch(ex){}}()

Let’s not lie to ourselves and act like Michelle Obama is NOT history in the making! The first black First Lady of the United States? Come on now. It will start with her but it surely won’t end with her. ;)

If you are in Brooklyn, you can celebrate Women’s History Month with First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum. If you are in NYC on Saturday and love Hip Hop, you can celebrate Women’s History Month with this jam.

Americans Go To The Polls To Elect The Next U.S. Presidentvar iamInit = function() {try{initIamServingHandler(320,213,698233,”http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/Resources/Css/css2.css”)}catch(ex){}}()

It’s so crazy how much history was made in a couple of months! 100 year old Black women got to vote for and elect a black president. This may not seem like much to most but when your family has been slaves for the past 300 years, this is HUGE. Especially for those who have lived through slavery and segregation. Bless them!

Now let’s move onto March 10th…

According to the HIV/AIDS Awareness Website:

In 2005, women represented 26 percent of new AIDS diagnoses, compared to only 11 percent of new AIDS cases reported in 1990. Most women are infected with HIV through heterosexual contact and injection drug use.

Women of color are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. AIDS is now the leading cause of death for Black women ages 25 to 34.

You can get involved in your area by clicking here. In NYC, from 3/6 – 3/13, Womens and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day will be celebrated here. If you can participate, please do. (youpi)

Now, even though we are celebrating Women’s History this month, I truly believe that in order to respect the past, we must use the lessons learned then for the future. With this in mind, I’m going to give you links to a couple of websites and blogs that I think are doing a great job in helping women in the present and for the future:

kiva.org –> Micro-lending at its finest. It allows you to loan to the working poor around the world. I don’t know why but it works. I’m going to lend to someone in need by the end of the month. You can lend in increments of $25 or more.

International Women’s Day is March 8th. You can help out not only by participating with kiva.org but also with seva.org. Seva means “service” in Sanskrit. Karma Yoga is based on seva and goes beyond that in regards to the manner in which you perform your service. According to the website,

Working in nine countries in addition to the United States, Seva Foundation supports projects in the area of health and wellness, community development, environmental protection and cultural preservation.

Working with children and parents in the United States, lend4health is a blog that does micro-lending to benefit those that need help with their health and wellness. Spawned from kiva.org, lend4health is currently helping out children and adults dealing with autism spectrum disorders. For more information, click here.

The last website that I’m going to talk about is called Off the Mat,Into the World. Created by Yogini Seane Corn, Hala Khouri, and Suzanne Sterling, OTM takes Yoga and Seva to new levels with their Humanitarian tours. For more information, please click here.

I think this is it for now…we need to celebrate women everyday – the past, the present, and the future. Women need to celebrate their bodies, their mindset, and what we do for this planet and humanity. No more of this “secondary but necessary” business. Once and for all, let women feel and rise up to the word equality. Respect from others can only come when we start to truly respect ourselves.

Until next time…stay strong, stay healthy, and fight dis-ease!

Movements XVI: Things are looking uP!

It’s been a while since I really posted something up of substance. Now that the filler has been placed, it’s time for me to get off of my self-imposed vacation and get back to giving you the latest and greatest information that will enable you to see and be better health!

First, I hope you like the pic. Kyla Jolene is a great photographer and I have been watching her work from afar. I wanted to put her photos on my blog for sometime and I’m glad I finally am able to do so. If I don’t put up more of Kyla’s pics, it’s only because she asked me not to. I don’t know her personally but good work is good work and it can’t be denied.

I have updated one of my blogs. Please click here for the latest information on herbs that will help you in dealing with Uterine Fibroids. Please note that hops is a good herb to use for Breast Cancer as well.

My Yoga schedule is back in full swing! First up…I’m going to teach a 4 week course called the Fundamentals of Hatha Yoga. If you’re in NYC and would like to learn the basics of Hatha Yoga and an Integral Yoga Hatha I Beginner’s class, then this course is for you. For more information and to register, please click here.

I’m also going to teach a Hatha I Beginners Class every other Sunday at 6:15pm, starting March 15. If you click on the link above, you’ll also find more information on Integral Yoga.

That’s it for now. Please provide feedback by posting a comment or by emailing me at drea@dorightforyourself.org

One more thing, I have been doing this blog for a long time. What started out as a homework assignment for the Institute for Integrative Nutrition has become something much more. I need to stop acting like I’m not an accomplished Holistic Health and Nutritional Consultant and Yoga Instructor. Sooner than later, I’m going to put up links and give more information for my consultations and packages. Spring time is coming. I can provide you with the best in nutrition, fitness, and over all wellness. Now it’s really time to get it together. All of us.

Until next time…stay strong, stay healthy, and fight dis-ease! (and thank you so much for keeping up with me and your health and wellness)
